Summary: "Did you want to talk about something?"

Pansy's feet hurt.

They had been dancing for hours, spinning round and round on the dancefloor, and she was getting tired. It was a pleasant sort of tired though. She had been looking forward to this night since the Yule Ball had been announced. Finally something a little more classy than the fests Hogwarts usually hosted.

There were frequent dances at Beauxbatons – or so her mother had told her – and she'd always wished the same were true for Hogwarts. She'd dreamed of decorated halls and pretty dresses and Draco, pale and handsome in his festive robes as he led her onto the dancefloor.

As with most things, the reality didn't quite live up to her expectations.

She had gone with Draco, but instead of gentle touches and passionate kisses, there had been stiff conversation and a lot of Keeping Up Appearances. She shouldn't have expected anything else, really.

"Would you fancy going for a walk?" Draco asked, his breath hot on her neck as he leaned closer so she could hear him over the music.

She smiled. Maybe there would be some romance tonight after all. "I would."

Draco smiled back and deftly manoeuvred them to the edge of the dancefloor, where he took one hand off her hip. He kept the fingers of his other hand intertwined with hers. There were only a few people left. Longbottom, who was a suprisingly good dancer considering he usually managed to stumble over his own feet while standing, was dancing with the Weasley girl, and Hagrid was stepping on Madame Maxim's feet in an attempt at a waltz, but otherwise the dancefloor was empty. Pansy looked over to where the Slytherins of their year had been sitting earlier and only saw Theodore and Millicent. They were talking animatedly, and Pansy nudged Draco to point it out.

"I wonder what they have in common?"

Draco looked over and snorted. "Booze, most likely. Let's go."

Pansy nodded and let him pull her along. The fresh air felt cold on her skin as they left the castle, and she wondered how late it was and when the teachers would enact curfew.

There were fairy lights sprinkled all over the bushes, and Pansy gripped Draco's hand tighter. She could see him look at her out of the corner of her eyes, but neither of them said a word until they had sat down on a bench a little ways off from everyone else. She was pretty sure she'd spotted several upper year students snogging in the bushes, but she decided not to bring it up as she felt a little uncomfortable already.

"Did you want to talk about something?" Pansy thought there must be a reason Draco had brought her here, and, as he was keeping his distance, it didn't seem to be of a physical nature.

He nodded. The fairy lights were reflected in his eyes, but it was too dark to see what expression they held. "We've been friends for a long time," Draco started.

Pansy waited, but when nothing more came, she nodded. "I'm aware. Although..." She shifted a little closer and put her hand on Draco's knee. "I was hoping it might turn into something more than that."

"Yes... well." Draco looked down at her hand and then back up at her, and she could see him swallow. She suppressed a smirk. "I was hoping that too, but..."

Pansy sighed and sat back. "But what?"

Draco remained quiet while two Hufflepuffs with their arms interlinked passed them by. They looked happy and drunk and, just for a moment, Pansy wished it was her and Draco. Then she remembered who she was and how foolish it was to wish to be a Hufflepuff of all things and shook her head at herself.

"You know what's coming, don't you?" Draco interrupted her thoughts.

They were alone again, only far off laughter and chirping sounds reminding Pansy they were still on school grounds. She frowned and tried to make sense of Draco's question. "Are you talking about the Dark Lord?"

Draco nodded and Pansy narrowed her eyes. "Have you heard something?"

Draco hesitated for a moment too long. "You have, haven't you? Tell me," she demanded, her pulse loud in her ears.

"I don't really know anything," Draco admitted. "I've just heard rumours....They've always said he'd come back, but I think it'll be soon, Pansy." He tried very hard to sound excited, but there was a faint shiver in his voice that gave him away. He was scared.

Pansy knew he wasn't as confident as he liked people to believe. It was hard to miss he was always striving for his father's affection and pride and only very rarely got it. She'd been there when he had tried to ride a broom for the first time. Draco had slipped and started crying and, instead of comforting him, his father had told him to do it better next time. Pansy had shown him the right grip and how to do dives, and ever since then they'd been friends.

When she moved closer again, it wasn't for the sake of getting him to admit to their budding relationship. It was to remind him that she was still his friend, first and foremost. She put her arm around him and kissed his cheek.

"It'll be all right. We're on the winning side, I promise."

He stiffened and refused to look at her. "I know that, Pansy. I'm not afraid."

"I know you're not," she lied. "But it never hurts to remind yourself. Your family has always been regarded important by the people that matter. Society is going to be better. We'll be better."

He finally turned to look at her, a relieved smile on his face. "You're right. Of course you're right." He returned the kiss on the cheek and then grinned and pulled her into his lap. "Enough talking. There are better things to do on a night like this."

She raised her eyebrows, but chuckled and gave in after a few seconds, putting her hands on his shoulder and brushing their lips together briefly.

“I’m glad you asked me to the dance.”

Draco smirked and slid his hands down to her hips. His fingers felt hot through the thin material of her robes, and she kissed him again. “Really glad.”

She could feel his lips move against hers, and after a moment, he pulled back to give her a more sincere smile.

“So am I.”

This was really lovely. I love how you're able to show Draco's fear and emotion's through Pansy's eyes, that just shows how well she knows and understands him. This was really sweet, but with a realistic view on the future. Well done!

ps: where were the frilly pink dressrobes? they should have deserved a cameo! ;)
